ABOUT TIME: TOUCH & GO (The Present): In the heart of the present toils a figure.  She is the moving “now”, not standing still but existing in some fugue state of immediacy. Her labor defines her moment of existence.  No one stops to smell the roses.

Only the gold footprints testify to the transient beauty and burdens of the living. “With Bach’s fugues filling my studio and McTaggart’s paradoxes jotted in my notes,” Testé said, “I sought to create a dramatic gesture.  This is the moment where the flow of time turns from the past to face the future.”

TOUCH & GO was the first of the ABOUT TIME 2023 series and layered with allegory.

All three sculptures from the ABOUT TIME series feature a very deliberate compositional geometry between the figures’ attention and their billowing outsized capes.  Testé traces each swirling force with goldleaf stressing the dynamic potential of the future, present, and past.  She further connects the series with musical metaphors as titles.

The ABOUT TIME series was part of “Heroines 2024” a Laura Testé solo show hosted by the University of Michigan Taubman Health Center.

TOUCH & GO

The future and the past immortal.
But not she, no status quo.
Moving by the moment, touch and go.

Always at the cusps of daybreaks,
Between heartaches and hellos.
Sowing seeds of being, she soon grows.

And when she declares her freeing,
Wild as the cape she throws,
Casting fate and seeing, where she blows.

Her every hour is retreating,
The fleeting-now that no one knows.
Living in the present, she lifts her toes.
